Vir fortis (from latin) means hero, a strong man.
This artwork depicts African-American activist Phill Wilson, who founded the Black AIDS Institute in 1999. His career in activism started after he and his partner were both diagnosed with HIV in the early 1980s.
Artwork belongs to a series of conceptual portraits dedicated to inspirational personalities that Anit has been creating since 2021. She chose to incorporate Phill Wilson's face into the scene of a baroque portrait (Young Sick Bacchus) by Caravaggio to draw attention to the essence of his activism.
